The talking heads on my RCA Victor Television Receiver keep saying that Spain “is the Red Sox of the World Cup.” But, it’s really Poland that better completes the metaphor. A long history of losses to the evil empire (on and off the field) and thrilling near misses. Spain is more like the Cubs — great players, great tradition, no championships.

Best Game: Germany v Poland. Polish fans across Boston just replaced the pictures on their dart boards from Bucky Dent to Oliver Neuville.

Best ESPN Factoid: none.

Best face paint:
Sadly, Gene Simmons could not be a part of the Korean Kiss Army tribute.

The Final Whistle: The one that came 90 seconds too late for Poland.

Overall Hasselhoff Rating for the Day: (out of 5)
Dancing! Finally! Tunisia is our new favorite team. Poor officiating in the Spain v Egypt game tarnishes the day and subtracts a Hasselhoff.
